It arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition. One person found this helpful. Format: Paperback. I quit about 50 pages in -- after scanning the rest of the book.

It is little more than a recapitulation of official records and action reports -- dry, unimaginative, and stilted. There is minimal insight into the decision making processes within and around the 92 ID Look elsewhere. This book serves as a tribute to the men who fought, died, or were wounded fighting for their country while being subjected to prejudice, bigotry and ignorance while in theater and at home. I wish the book had more map illustrations depicting unit movements on maps to provide a detailed picture to accompany the detailed descriptions.

Format: Hardcover. If anyone yet doubts the pervasive, pure UGLINESS and soulful destructiveness of organized, systematized, official racial prejudice in this Country and especially, historically, in our Military, with the attendant unquantifiable agony and alienation resulting therefrom, What one will learn is that racial hatred was endemic in our society and simply reflected, with incredible intensity, in our Military organizations.

Seattle’s last buffalo soldier, 98, doesn’t want black regiments’ history to ‘fade out’

Additional Information. The 92nd Division of the Fifth Army was the only African American infantry division to see combat in Europe during and , suffering more than 3, casualties.

Members of this unit, known as Buffalo Soldiers, endured racial violence on the home front and experienced racism abroad. Engaged in combat for nine months, they were under the command of southern white infantry officers like their captain, Eugene E.

Frequently bought together

During the war, the protocol that required the assignment of southern white officers to command black units, both in Europe and in the Pacific theater, was often problematic, but Johnston seemed more successful than most, earning the trust and respect of his men at the same time that he learned to trust and respect them. Gene Johnston and the African American soldiers were transformed by the war and upon their return helped transform the nation. Table of Contents. Cover Download Save.
